Overview of the Desktop Management Interface (DMI)

The Desktop Management Interface (DMI) is a specification from the Desktop Management Task Force that enables communication between various software entities to allow local or remote management of a PC. There are three types of entity:

Component Instrumentation is the software that understands the details of a software or hardware component of a PC. A PC or adapter vendor provides instrumentation for their component. This instrumentation gathers information from the product, converts it into a canonical form and passes it to the Service Provider.

Management Applications gather information on the local or remote PCs by querying Service Providers who pass on the information given to them by Component Instrumentation entities. The Management Application then presents this information to the user either on the local machine or across the LAN to a network management application.

A Service Provider is the "glue" that allows communication between Management Applications and Component Instrumentation.

Examples of available DMI management applications (which also provide the Service Provider) are:

For more information about DMI, refer to the Desktop Management Taskforce web site: www.dmtf.org.

The Madge DMI product provided in this LSS release is the Component Instrumentation for Madge Networks token-ring adapters and subscribes to version 2.0 of the DMI specification.

Installing DMI

Before this product is installed, you must have previously installed a DMI management application that subscribes to version 2.0 of the DMI specification. You can obtain this from your PC manufacturer or from Intel.

You can only use the Madge DMI product with drivers which are miniport drivers from the LSS 6.1(1) release or later.

To install the product:

  1. Using the My Computer applet or Windows Explorer, find the program called setupdmi. Double click on this icon. The installation process starts.

  2. You will be asked if you really want to install the product and whether you would like to change the location where the product files will be installed. You must install the product files on your local hard disk.

  3. Once you have provided the requested information the installation will proceed. If you have not previously installed a DMI Service Provider, the installation will fail.

  4. After the installation has completed, re-boot your PC.

If you get an error which reports that the system cannot find a dll file, for example WDMIUTIL.DLL, you need to upgrade your DMI management application. You must use a management application which subscribes to version 2.0 of the DMI standard.
